Food Pyramid

I got a personalized(!) food pyramid from mypyramid.gov. It is for a 2000 calorie/day diet so I’ll just eat a little less to stay at 1800:

  • 6 oz grains, at least half whole grains
  • 2-1/2 c. vegetables
  • 2 c. fruit
  • 3 c. milk
  • 5-1/2 oz meat & beans
  • oils, 6 tsp/day
  • extras, solid fats & sugars, limit to 265 cal/day

Obviously I haven’t been doing very well w/a balanced diet so I’m going to work on following this. My problem areas are vegetables & milk. Since I’m allergic to most vegetables (I thought that sounded good, ok I just don’t like them), it is difficult. I drink v-8 juice, that should count for something. . . I can eat peas, corn, carrots (raw), lettuce, cucumbers, turnips, radishes, tomatoes, peppers - I just don’t like any that are really good for you like broccoli etc.

Milk is hard because I don’t drink milk & I dislike yogurt. What I do like is cheese which is unfortunately high in fat. I guess I can have it & just limit myself. I’ll try to drink a glass of milk everyday. The good thing is I already use fat-free milk!

I’m not eating a lot of fruit but it isn’t because I don’t like it - I just don’t do it. I like lots of different fruits so I just need to get in the habit of eating it. I do drink orange juice but tend to drink more than I should. I’m going to work on limiting it to 8 oz/day. Sometimes I’ll drink 2-3 glasses a day - I get these citrus cravings. I think maybe I have scurvy. On the other hand I’m convinced that orange juice is why I rarely get sick. For 2 days before I got sick last week I was out of oj. I’m pretty sure that is what caused this.
